Jennifer Crusie has a reputation for writing great romance novels that are filled with laugh-out-loud humor. She does not fail us in Welcome to Temptation. Phin is the mayor of Temptation, Ohio. He’s far more interested in books and his book store than in politics. But he has to get involved when his constituents come to him with stories about a film crew that has come to Temptation. The crew may or may not be filming pornography. Sophie and her two younger siblings are the children of a father who is a grifter and con artist. When their mother dies, Sophie takes over to care for her brother and sister. She accompanies the film crew to Temptation to help out her little sister who is a budding filmmaker. Sophie and Phin meet, sparks fly, and despite numerous obstacles, they fall for each other. Strengths of this book include: a) plenty of humor; b) the development of Phin as a character as he comes to understand who he really is and starts being the person he wants to be (which is not a politician); c)the development of Sophie who has always taken care of everyone and now has to learn how to accept being cared for (by Phin, of course), AND best of all, for her to discover the absolutely perfect role for her in her new life in Temptation. Readers will be interested to read the Wikipedia article titled “Welcome to Temptation.” The article informs us that this book was specifically written by Jennifer Crusie to “to deconstruct the complaints levied against the [romance] genre,” and is, “at its core, a feminist defense of the romance genre.” I have Kindle Unlimited and never pay extra for books - until this one. I noticed it on my “recommended books” list and the reviews were so good I thought I’d give it a try. Mistake. Big Mistake. Full disclosure: I only got to 46% read. I wanted to continue because I paid for it but then decided I’d already lost the money, I wasn’t going to lose more time as well. So perhaps it suddenly changed into a riveting page turner at the halfway point. I’ll never know and I’m okay with that.The writing style is a little odd for me. There are way too many characters in this book to keep track of. The worst part though is that it’s just Boring. Yes, Boring with a capital B. But, based on the reviews, clearly I’m in the minority. Different strokes and all. Ones man’s junk...etc.There is good news though! At least now I won’t need worry about buying the next books in the series.Apologies to the author, but I can’t recommend this one.
